SPF 145: The Idol of Efficency

Efficiency is being productive without wasting time or expense. Is efficiency the same as 'making the most of every opportunity?' What happens when our days are hectic and we just can't get everything done? How can we be at peace and have more joy when we go about our to-do lists? I'm covering these questions today and how we can prove faithful with our daily worship of God no matter how "efficient" we are with our day.

From Freezer To Cooker
By Conner, Polly

The Idol of Efficiency

Ephesians 5:15-16

“Look carefully then how you walk, not as unwise but as wise, making the best use of the time, because the days are evil.”

The word used in the phrase making the most use of your time is actually a Greek word that means to redeem we are to redeem the days because they are evil. The heart of God is not that we would maximize our time and getting things done and being productive to feel good about our days. The heart of God is that people would worship him. To to redeem the day and make the best use of it is to worship God no matter what happens.

Two Lessons on Efficiency:

  1. God wants to sanctify us

  2. God is Sovereign and is advancing His mission

God’s sovereignty means that 1. Nothing is wasted in our days because His plans never are thwarted and 2. His mission will be accomplished.

By what standard do we call our days good or bad, successful or unsuccessful.

And the fact is, we don’t see behind the sovereignty of God curtain so to speak. God knows all he sees all he plans all and we could not ever possibly know all that God is doing for many reasons.

We might not see or understand but God is still at work.

“The risen and reigning King of kings and Lord of lords rules over this world and over his mission with absolute sovereignty. Nothing is outside his sovereign will. If he meets with resistance, he either allows it for his purposes, or he overcomes it for his purposes.” - Desiring God

The fact is no matter how your day goes the Lord is raining, the Lord’s plan is prevailing. God cares about you and therefore allows these inefficient days to bring you to him.

Five Perspectives to Encourage and Give Hope

No. 1: Everyone’s days on this earth are numbered and we will all face death, but we have hope in Christ

No. 2: God is Sovereign and is working all things according to His plan

No. 3: God has called your children home right now

No. 4: Education is more than school subjects

No. 5: God wants to sanctify you

“We can view quarantine as a building that’s been tapped to be sprayed with bug spray and everything in it will die, or we can view it as a greenhouse of growth. It depends on our perspective of this opportunity and it depends on who is at the center - us or the Lord, our comfort or God’s glory.”

Why do we need to teach our kids?

Because God commands it:

Deuteronomy 4:10

‘Gather the people to me, that I may let them hear my words, so that they may learn to fear me all the days that they live on the earth, and that they may teach their children so.’

Deuteronomy 6:7

You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise.

Deuteronomy 11:19

You shall teach them to your children, talking of them when you are sitting in your house, and when you are walking by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise.

Ephesians 6:4

Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger, but bring them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord.

Psalm 78:4-6

We will not hide them from their children, but tell to the coming generation the glorious deeds of the Lord, and his might, and the wonders that he has done. He established a testimony in Jacob and appointed a law in Israel, which he commanded our fathers to teach to their children, that the next generation might know them, the children yet unborn, and arise and tell them to their children,

Psalm 145:3-4

Great is the Lord, and greatly to be praised, and his greatness is unsearchable. One generation shall commend your works to another, and shall declare your mighty acts.

2 Timothy 3: 15-17

But as for you, continue in what you have learned and have firmly believed, knowing from whom you learned it and how from childhood you have been acquainted with the sacred writings, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.

2 Timothy 1:5

I am reminded of your sincere faith, a faith that dwelt first in your grandmother Lois and your mother Eunice and now, I am sure, dwells in you as well.

What happens when we do not teach our children?

Look at Judges 2:6-10

And all that generation also were gathered to their fathers. And there arose another generation after them who did not know the Lord or the work that he had done for Israel.

11 And the people of Israel did what was evil in the sight of the Lord and served the Baals. 12 And they abandoned the Lord, the God of their fathers, who had brought them out of the land of Egypt. They went after other gods, from among the gods of the peoples who were around them, and bowed down to them. And they provoked the Lord to anger. 13 They abandoned the Lord and served the Baals and the Ashtaroth.

What do we teach our kids?

We teach them about God and His ways as known in the Bible.

My top do’s and don’ts tips:

Do:

  1. Read the Bible with your kids consistently - pick a time and place and do it.

  2. Do memorize Scripture with them. They are sponges. Make up a song, or look up Scripture songs online like Seeds Family Worship or Songs for Saplings that sing Bible verses. They will memorize them quickly and have a reference point of truth — and so will you!

  3. Do you Scripture to correct and discipline your children. Refer back to the truths and stories you are learning. Help them connect the truth with living out their own faith in real life.

  4. Repeat repeat repeat. Even if your kids know everything about Adam and Eve - always go back. Don’t feel like you always have to say something new. We learn new things from the same stories all the time. Refresh your children on things you’ve learned. Repeat themes of God being Creator, of God being Redeemer, of Jesus dying on the cross to forgive sins. Repeat the important things and find them in the stories you read.

Don’t:

  1. Don’t feel like you have to explain every detail for something to make sense to a child. Children have a natural inclination for faith - it’s one reason why it’s so important to cement truth in them now. They are not skeptical. They have tender hearts. It’s why we are called to have faith like a child. If your kids are really young - pick one thing for them to know about what you read. If they are a little older, pick two things and ask a question or two about the text. Have them retell what you read. Ask them their favorite part. Always link it back to who God is and what he did.

  2. Don’t get caught up with what you don’t know. Truth is truth even if we don’t understand. We can keep learning about the Trinity but we can also acquiesce to the fact that there are some things that we can’t explain but they are still truth. And somethings we CAN understand but we ourselves need to mature and learn how to explain it.

  3. Don’t give up. Be consistent. Remember that you are teaching them life giving Words of God. You Are telling them the way of salvation.

Better Bible Reading:

  1. Have a Plan

  2. Stick to the Plan

  3. Don’t give up if you fall behind

Believing these things as we approach Scripture will also bless our Bible reading:

  1. Believing the Authority of Scripture

  2. Believing the inerrancy of Scripture

  3. Believing the Clarity of Scripture

  4. Believing the necessity of Scripture

  5. Believing the Sufficiency of Scripture

The Word of God can be in the mind without being in the heart; but it cannot be in the heart without first being in the mind.

Seasons of Life

Gregg Harris breaks down life in to 4 seasons that typically follow our age:

Preparation (0-20)

Production (20-40)

Provision (40-60)

Protection (60-end of life)

Each season generally has a focus and can be an exciting time of learning, growing, and advancing the Kingdom of God.

Thinking about our life in seasons should not make us feel like we are prisoners or confined to a timeline box, but give us freedoms to enjoy our stage that God has us in, even if we anticipate a future season.

A few insights as we consider the seasons of our lives:

  1. Each season holds training and preparation for what is next.

  2. Each season involves learning and practice.

  3. Each season is a time to practice contentment and patience.

Christmas and Submission

And Mary said, “Behold, I am the servant of the Lord; let it be to me according to your word.” Luke 1:38

This is what I want us to take away from the Christmas story today - humility and submission to the authority of God.

First, we have God’s Son, in humility coming from heaven to be born of a woman, born under the law so that He might do God the Father’s redemptive will on earth. He was fully submissive to the Father’s will and the Lord glorified Him.
Second, we have Mary, who was anticipating the Messiah, wanting, waiting, but never would have guessed she would be the woman who God would use to bring the Messiah into this World.

When we look at God’s Lordship and authority in our lives is a blessing.

First of all God is a God of order not of chaos.

Second, God gives us His law and His word which gives us clarity and understanding of Him, ourselves, and this world.

Third, God’s authority means His plan will always go forward and He will always be victorious.

My hope is that as we remember Christ coming into the world we would remember His humility and submission to the will of His Father, that we would take the posture of Mary with a heart bent toward the Lord saying - let it be to me according to your word.

Women & Work: Hospitality, The Table, Sabbath Feasting

Practicing Hospitality:

  1. Hospitality is a generous reception of people in your home.

  2. This is a work and it’s a biblical work that is for both men and women

  3. Hospitality starts with the heart, not with the dishes or food or event.

The Heart of Hospitality:

1 Peter 4:9 “Show hospitality to one another without grumbling.”

  1. Hospitality involves affection toward your guests

  2. Hospitality involves a generous heart

  3. Hospitality involves a personal growing opportunity

Mary and Martha in Luke 10:38-42

Welcoming people in our home and feeding them is good and honors the Lord. It also is a time to practice trusting God and not becoming troubled and anxious about the things that are not as important.

feasting and celebrating

The Table holds an important place in our homes. It is where we nourish bodies and souls with food and conversation. It is where we pray and maybe where you sing and read the Word together. It is a place where we constantly remember God’s grace and mercies as we fill our bellies and rejoice in His provision.

Since the Table is important, we as women can think thoughtfully and intentionally about it. Not only about what we serve, but what we say, and what we do around the table.

Ecclesiastes 9:7 says, “Go, eat your bread with joy, And drink your wine with a merry heart; For God has already accepted your works.”

Matthew Henry commentary on Ecclesiastes 9:7:
We must enjoy ourselves, enjoy our friends, enjoy our God, and be careful to keep a good conscience, that nothing may disturb us in these enjoyments. We must serve God with gladness, in the use of what he gives us, and be liberal in communicating it to others, and not suffer ourselves to be oppressed with inordinate care and grief about the world. We must eat our bread as Israelites, not in our mourning (Deut. 26:14), as Christians, with gladness and liberality of heart, Acts 2:46

FeminaGirls Blog:
"God wants us to be joyful and merry, and that is part of what incarnational living is about. We want fat souls around our tables.”

"Incarnational living means our Christian faith comes out in what we do and how we live. One of the central things we do each day is sit down around the table and eat together. We are to eat our bread with lots of laughter. We are to drink our wine with merriment and happiness. Our homes should be overflowing with the joy of knowing Christ, and the table is a perfect place for this to be happening on a daily basis, and especially on the Lord’s Day. The Lord’s Day is our weekly feast of celebration. Sabbath feasting is a victory celebration each week. We win! Jesus rose!"

Keeper of the Home

Proverbs 14:1

The wisest of women builds her house,
but folly with her own hands tears it down.

Titus 2:5

Women are to be workers at home or keepers of the home.

Women are to be homeward oriented meaning her heart is toward the people and responsibilities of the home.

What Titus 2:5 teaches is that the home is a top priority for a woman.

That means our work in the home has precedence over other things.

The home is special. It’s important.

The home is . . .

  • a place where culture is made,

  • a place where the Gospel is preached,

  • it is a place where people are ministered to,

  • a place where disciples are made,

  • It’s a place where creativity and learning happen,

  • where character is shaped,

  • where there is respite

  • where bodies and souls are nourished

Some things to consider when addressing women keeping the home:

  1. First I mentioned that being a keeper at home doesn’t mean women should not be educated or work outside the home. It does mean that the home is a priority. Pastor Douglas Wilson had some wise advice for women who are considering working or volunteering - does this work remove the home from being a priority, or is it an extension of your priority.

  2. Second, there are different seasons in a woman’s life. So there are seasons in a woman’s life, however, home always remains the priority.

  3. Third, being a keeper of the home is something that involves growth. There are skills and passions we grow in over time. It’s part of being sanctified and part of being a human.

Building a Home - Not Tearing it Down

No. 1 As keepers of the home we set the atmosphere of the home.

Our attitudes and beliefs have a great impact on the atmosphere of our home.

Our homes can be ones that are filled with great joy or feel like everyone has to walk on eggshells.

How can we do this?

  • Make reading the word and prayer a priority in your life.

  • God’s Word and prayer shapes are beliefs and helps us with our attitudes. It gives us a right perspective as we go about our day.

  • We can repent quickly, forgive quickly, - not be a house of bitterness

  • We can be thankful - talk about things we are thankful for, ask others what they are thankful for

  • Rejoice with others and rejoice in the Lord

  • Sing! This is an incredible way to lift the spirit and set a tone in the home of praising God.

No. 2 As keepers of the home we are domestic.

"She looks well to the ways of her household and does not eat the bread of idleness." Proverbs 31:27

Domestic means we are running the home and household affairs. We are looking well to the ways of our households. We care and so we manage our things God has given to us.
