Self Righteousness vs Righteousness of Christ

Red Flags:

  1. Creating our own law and traditions that make us feel righteous

  2. Self Righteousness is about drawing attention to self and longs for the applause of man

  3. Holding it over others or criticizing those who do not hold to your own standard

  4. Looks for others to follow them and their standards.

"If ye be led of the Spirit, ye are not under the law."

Galatians 5:18

He who looks at his own character and position from a legal point of view, will not only despair when he comes to the end of his reckoning, but if he be a wise man he will despair at the beginning; for if we are to be judged on the footing of the law, there shall no flesh living be justified. How blessed to know that we dwell in the domains of grace and not of law! When thinking of my state before God the question is not, "Am I perfect in myself before the law?" but, "Am I perfect in Christ Jesus?" That is a very different matter. We need not enquire, "Am I without sin naturally?" but, "Have I been washed in the fountain opened for sin and for uncleanness?" It is not "Am I in myself well pleasing to God?" but it is "Am I accepted in the Beloved?" The Christian views his evidences from the top of Sinai, and grows alarmed concerning his salvation; it were better far if he read his title by the light of Calvary. "Why," saith he, "my faith has unbelief in it, it is not able to save me." Suppose he had considered the object of his faith instead of his faith, then he would have said, "There is no failure in him, and therefore I am safe." He sighs over his hope: "Ah! my hope is marred and dimmed by an anxious carefulness about present things; how can I be accepted?" Had he regarded the ground of his hope, he would have seen that the promise of God standeth sure, and that whatever our doubts may be, the oath and promise never fail. Ah! believer, it is safer always for you to be led of the Spirit into gospel liberty than to wear legal fetters. Judge yourself at what Christ is rather than at what you are. Satan will try to mar your peace by reminding you of your sinfulness and imperfections: you can only meet his accusations by faithfully adhering to the gospel and refusing to wear the yoke of bondage.

Virtue

Virtue is moral excellence for the glory of God through His power at work in you.

We should be virtuous in thought, feelings, and actions.

Being morally excellent is not being legalistic if it’s not for the purpose of attaining salvation.

Catechisms

Catechism summarizes the basic principles of Christianity in question and answer form. It’s a summary of Christian doctrine derived from Scripture and memorized giving a person a biblical framework for life.

Catechisms are great for parents to teach to their children, but not limited to children learning them. They are for the whole church community.

Now catechisms are not to replace memorizing Scripture. They questions and answers are based on a systematic approach to Scripture, meaning the answers come from a breadth of texts that support the doctrine at hand.

Should Christian Leave the Bible Out of It?

The question is, should Christians leave the Bible out of discussions, arguments, and debates with unbelievers?

The short answer is no. The long answer is no. But if you want to learn more about why, join Andy and I on the podcast! The truth is neutrality is a myth and if you leave out the Bible, you’ll have to defend your worldview without it. It doesn’t make sense, especially because the other person is not going to to abandon their worldview. The myth is that if you take God out of it, then you are neutral.

Temptation

Temptation: Nelson’s Bible Dictionary defines temptation as “an enticement or invitation to sin, with the implied promise of greater good to be derived from following the way of disobedience.

Reading: Matthew 4:1-10

  1. You can’t escape temptation (physically and through good character).

But we are not above temptation - just as Jesus wasn’t

Even in a solitary place ...

“In the haunts of men we expect to be tempted, but even seclusion will not guard us from the same trial. Jesus Christ was led away from human society into the wilderness, and was tempted of the devil. Solitude has its charms and its benefits, and may be useful in checking the lust of the eye and the pride of life; but the devil will follow us into the most lovely retreats.” Charles Spurgeon

Godly character does not make us above temptation.

We can and should grow in godly character, but must remember temptation comes to every person.

Genesis 4:6-7

The LORD said to Cain, “Why are you angry, and why has your face fallen? If you do well, will you not be accepted? And if you do not do well, sin is crouching at the door. Its desire is contrary to you, but you must rule over it.”

“Do not suppose that it is only the worldly-minded who have dreadful thoughts and blasphemous temptations, for even spiritual-minded persons endure the same; and in the holiest position we may suffer the darkest temptation. The utmost consecration of spirit will not insure you against Satanic temptation. Christ was consecrated through and through. It was his meat and drink to do the will of him that sent him: and yet he was tempted! Your hearts may glow with a seraphic flame of love to Jesus, and yet the devil will try to bring you down to Laodicean lukewarmness.” - Charles Spurgeon

2. Common Temptations: Comfort and Pride

Jesus tempted to have comfort in his extreme discomfort.

Self esteem and self importance that constant need to be affirmed = pride and prestige

3. How to Fight Temptation

How did Jesus fight temptation?

Theology. Good theology.

Jesus got theological. He used Scripture which directed his actions. They sustained him in His weakness to know what to do - what would be obedient and pleasing to the Father. And he knew the right interpretation and application of the Scripture.

Satan used scripture too but he twisted it, that’s why theology is important.

“Like the old knights in war time, we must sleep with helmet and breastplate buckled on, for the arch-deceiver will seize our first unguarded hour to make us his prey. The Lord keep us watchful in all seasons, and give us a final escape from the jaw of the lion and the paw of the bear.” - Charles Spurgeon

SPF 186: A "New" Way to Twist Scripture (& Two Commonly Misused Verses)

Scripture is foundational for the Christian faith. But in a progressive Christian movement, people are now arguing that the Scriptures are authoritative but cannot be accurately interpreted. Is this true? Plus I review two popular Scriptures that get twisted all the time by two different Christian camps. They have to do with judging and gathering. Today we will look at the context of Scripture and how we can prove faithful in interpreting what God says in His Good and Holy Word.

Is Scripture Authoritative?

“All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, 17 that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.” 2 Timothy 3:16-17

Two Twisted Scriptures

Matthew 7:1 Judge not lest you be judged.

This passage says we are to help others by helping them take the speck out of their eye, but we are to first examine our own selves first. Pride wants to reduce our sin to nothing and magnify the sin of others

Cross References

  • Romans 2:1-5

  • Romans 14 - this passage about judgement is about exercising the law of love in Christian liberty. The things Paul teaches us not to pass judgment on in this passage are not sinful things Romans 14:1 “As for the one who is weak in faith, welcome him, but not to quarrel over opinions.”

Matthew 18:20 Where two or three are gathered there you have . . . .church?

“If your brother sins against you, go and tell him his fault, between you and him alone. If he listens to you, you have gained your brother. But if he does not listen, take one or two others along with you, that every charge may be established by the evidence of two or three witnesses. If he refuses to listen to them, tell it to the church. And if he refuses to listen even to the church, let him be to you as a Gentile and a tax collector. Truly, I say to you, whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven. Again I say to you, if two of you agree on earth about anything they ask, it will be done for them by my Father in heaven. For where two or three are gathered in my name, there am I among them.” Matthew 18

  • This passage is about confronting a believer who has sinned against another believer.

  • This is also includes church discipline.

  • This also tells us that Jesus cares for His Bride and shows up in a special way when unity is challenged among His sheep.
