SPF 215: Jesus: Lord & Son of Man & What That Means For Us

The two of the most common titles used for Jesus in the New Testament are Lord, and Son of Man. What is their significance, and how does it give us direction to prove faithful as women?

Jesus: Lord & Son of Man

The titles of Jesus have impact on our daily living. They equip us with truth and remind us of Jesus’ role, authority, and how we relate to him.

Names of Jesus Teaching Series by R.C. Sproul: https://www.ligonier.org/learn/series/names-of-jesus

Jesus is Lord

Greek word for Lord: kurios

One of the foundational principles of the Roman Empire, from Augustus on, was that salvation was brought to the people by Caesar. The message on their coins was that salvation is only to be found in Augustus, and “there is no other name given to men in which they can be saved” (Stauffer, Christ and the Caesars, p. 88). This gives a new contextual meaning to Peter’s bold declaration about Jesus Christ: “Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved” (Acts 4:12). If Caesar is Lord, follow him. If Christ is Lord, then follow Him. - Douglas Wilson

Blog and Mablog: https://dougwils.com/books-and-culture/s7-engaging-the-culture/the-obverse-image-of-god.html

Who’s image is on the coin? Caesars. But who’s image is on us? God’s. We are made in God’s image, and therefore we belong to God. Let us render to God what belongs to Him.

Son of Man

When Jesus refers to himself as the Son of Man, He is actually identifying himself as a heavenly authority - he is from God, he has come to take dominion - an everlasting dominion - a dominion that will not pass away or be destroyed, and he will be served.

Proving Faithful

Be students of God and His World.

Who is teaching you? Who is teaching your children? What are our sources? Are we letting first the word of God dwell in us richly? Are we learning things like history and science from a worldview that exalts God as Creator and Jesus as King?

Lets be students of God - my best friend used to pray Isaiah 50:4 that says: “The Lord GOD has given me the tongue of those who are taught, that I may know how to sustain with a word him who is weary. Morning by morning he awakens; he awakens my ear to hear as those who are taught.”

SPF 214: A Woman's Worth: Three Lies Feminism Preaches to You Part 2

Where is a woman’s worth? Is it tied up in positions and what she’s allowed to do, including inside the church? Is it wrapped up in achievement or success? Who defines what achievement and success are for the woman? Today I am addressing three lies toxic feminism preaches to women and what we can do be woman who are “faithful in all things” as it says in 1 Timothy. This is part 2 in a 2 part series.

Two More Lies

I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship. Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect. Romans 12:1 - 2

Lie No. 2: In order for a woman to experience worth, they must be elevated above men and men must in turn become more feminine.

The truth is God created male and female - both created in His likeness, but in a particular order with a particular design and a particular purpose.

“The history of Christian thought and teaching is mirrored by the sinister history of heresy. This is because ‘the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned’ (1 Corinthians 2:14). Heresies come fundamentally from man, and reflect the way that the natural man would like God to be, rather than the way God actually is. This is both the source of heresy and the reason for its appeal. By heresy we mean not merely teaching that departs from the Bible, but teaching that departs from the Bible in such a way as to overthrow the fundamentals of the Faith;” - Banner of Truth on Heresy and Gnosticism

https://banneroftruth.org/us/resources/articles/2016/gnosticism/

Feminism preaches that if you want worth -you must be elevated above men. We don’t find value in being equal. We find value in being over. Ruling. Making the rules.

“Radical feminism is moved along today by this gnostic viewpoint; it is moved along by the idea that the woman is the savior of mankind. As in Gnosticism, the creator God of Genesis, the foolish God, has to go. He is male. He is tyrannical. He denies basic human liberties, demands total obedience, threatens punishment for evil deeds; consequently, He’s got to go.

Feminist liberation releases all of us from God, releases us from all His evil male values, which He’s dumped into men. And by the way, the only hope is for women to become fully feminist, and for men to become feminine; then you’ve got androgyne. We’ve got to wipe out roles. We’ve got to wipe out marriage. We’ve got to get rid of family authority. We’ve got to get rid of stifling morality. The serpent Eve wants to set free; the false God of the Bible wants to enslave.” - John MacArthur

https://www.gty.org/library/sermons-library/90-99/feminisms-radical-agenda

It’s not about men or women being superior. It’s clear that the battle of the sexes is truly rooted in selfishness. It’s about Christ being Supreme - as it says in Colossians - Christ is preeminent.

Lie 3: There are certain achievements that give us more worth and value than others.

Truth: Jesus said to Peter - you must follow me.

This is a drumbeat of feminism - woman can do anything - but really they should focus on these select things because they are where we show the world how amazing and powerful and supreme we are.

The problem again is this self focus. It’s about me and I have decided what achievement and success are. But truly, God defines this through His word - take n Micah 6:8 says he has told you, oh man, what is good; and what does the lord require of you but to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God?

SPF 212: Authority, Moral Relativism, & Abortion

The Blind Stitch

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WbE5hXt27uU

By What Authority

So how to do expose umbilical worldviews that are under girding most moral arguments these days?

We appeal to authority.

We want to know

  • By what authority do you say this?

  • By what authority do you assert that?

  • By what authority should I believe what you are telling me?

For the Christian the authority is God. There is no one higher than God. God is over all and as Creator He has determined right, wrong, moral, immoral, just, unjust - He has given us commands to follow and a way to live our lives through His Word, the Bible. So the Bible, written by God using the hands of man, is our authority.

"The authority of the Holy Scripture, for which it ought to be believed, and obeyed, depends not upon the testimony of any man, or Church; but wholly upon God (who is truth itself) the author thereof: and therefore it is to be received, because it is the Word of God."

- Westminster Confession of Faith 1.4

https://www.monergism.com/wsf-14-authority-scripture

The biblical worldview relies on the authority of God because He is what is true.

SPF 211: Ultimately For Your Good (Throw off Doubt)

RC Sproul once preached, "The Heavenly Father never allows anything to happen to you that is not for your ultimate good. If we could believe that, we could face anything.” The Sovereignty of God is on full display in the Bible and in our own lives, but what happens when we doubt God? How can we prove faithful in believing His goodness for us?

God’s Goodness

"There are all kinds of things in the proximate realm that are troubling and bad; but God stands over that realm and has the power to take every bad thing that happens to you and make it contribute ultimately to your good. All these griefs and sufferings are ultimately being used for our good. Ultimately it is good that they have happened to us.

The Heavenly Father never allows anything to happen to you that is not for your ultimate good. If we could believe that, we could face anything." - R.C. Sproul

The proximate verse the ultimate: the proximate is the sufferings we endure presently and the ultimate is that God is over it all and will make it turn out for good.

Romans 8:28 “And we know that God causes all things to work together for good to those who love God to those who are called according to his purpose.”

Double-Mindedness

5 If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him. 6 But let him ask in faith, with no doubting, for the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea that is driven and tossed by the wind. 7 For that person must not suppose that he will receive anything from the Lord; 8 he is a double-minded man, unstable in all his ways. James 1:5-8

Here we are instructed in James to ask for wisdom with FAITH and not to doubt God. He promises to give us this wisdom generously and without reproach - meaning God is not disappointed you are asking for wisdom from Him - He’s not disapproving of you needing help!

But the requirement is that we ask in faith - BECAUSE if we are asking with doubt, we are not truly believing God, his nature or his promises. The doubt makes us double minded.

What to Do When Doubting

  1. Rest - We need to rest on the object of our faith not in the answer, solution or outcome.

  2. Prayer - “What happens at the end of each prayer? At the moment we say “amen” we rest everything in Christ’s hands - believing he will keep his promises to us. All prayer does not just flow out of faith but ultimately every prayer flows back into faith. Prayer is proof that faith lives and we can deploy it to destroy doubt.” - Jeremiah Montgomery

  3. Repent and and draw near to God - James 4:8 Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded.

“I have learned to kiss the waves that throw me up against the Rock of Ages”. ― Charles H. Spurgeon

Christian Culture

I think we can fall into the world’s trap of thinking Christians are stuffy and boring. But Christian culture is wonderful and exciting!

  • Christian culture happens because of our redemption.

  • It includes education, hospitality, celebrations and traditions and holidays, it includes praying at meals, making art and music, creating content, businesses - I mean think of culture and start defining what it should be biblically - in a way that would glorify God.

  • Sunday worship on the Lord’s day is part of Christian culture

  • We are called to “enculturate” our children in the Christian culture Ephesians 6:4

Training Our Children to Worship with Us

Part of training our children in the Christian culture is teaching them to worship the Lord corporately.

No. 1: But kids are too little to get anything out of the sermon - they learn way more in a class with kids their age doing crafts and singing kid songs.

  1. First we must not fall into the temptation that our kids are not getting anything out of a sermon. The hearing of God’s word never comes back without return. My former pastor used to say “Even if water runs through a sieve you still get a clean sieve.” Meaning, kids might not retain or understand but they are still getting washed in the word.

  2. Church is about worshipping the Lord

  3. It is our responsibility to teach our children the Word of God at home

No. 2: But I’m tired and I can’t pay attention or take notes.

  1. Hard things are not always bad things and there is fruit to be reaped: Galatians 6:9 And let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up.

  2. Seasons of little ones are short.

  3. The Lord will supply what you miss on Sundays

Tips

  1. Start training at home. https://www.instagram.com/thespearing/ Has a post on how they practice during the week by having the children sit at the dinner table for 10 minutes and learn to listen to the Word and sit still.

  2. Practice singing songs at home so they can sing together in church

  3. Teach children when to sit and stand at church while you’re at home.

  4. Teach children what church is all about - worshipping God

Think through - if we are to enculturate our children and train them how to live in a Christian culture how am I doing that in relation to corporate worship on Sundays?

  • Sometimes trials do come through our own sin or the sin of others, sometimes they come through other means, like nature, or illness, or sometimes it is through something else, but in it all - God is sovereign and it is part of His plan - just like Job confessed - no purpose of God’s can be thwarted

  • God puts us through trials to test us and refine us

  • James 1:2 Count it all joy, my brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds,3 for you know that the testing of your faith produces steadfastness.4 And let steadfastness have its full effect, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing.

  • 1 Peter 1:6-7 6 In this you rejoice, though now for a little while, if necessary, you have been grieved by various trials, 7 so that the tested genuineness of your faith—more precious than gold that perishes though it is tested by fire—may be found to result in praise and glory and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ.

  • These passages teach us that trials also produce good things in us

  • It is clear through narrative Scripture that trials also tools God uses to turn our hearts to the Lord, reveal sin or unbelief, humble us, exalt the Lord, prepare us for what is next, teach us the Lord’s comfort so that we will be able to comfort others, and even a stepping stone in the overarching Sovereign plan of God - just think of Joseph and how decades later after going through so many unjust moments was able to save his family from famine.

When going through trials it is critical to have good theology of our Sovereign God:

  • God promises he will never leave us or forsake us, so in the midst of hard, God is with us

  • God promises that we will never be separated from the love of Christ Jesus, so even when things are hard we must remember that we are loved and cared for

  • The Lord knows how to rescue the godly from trials according to 2 Peter 2

  • The Lord hears us when we call up on Him

  • And again, no plan of the Lord’s will be thwarted

The Horse And His Boy

The truth is throughout Scripture - God is not preparing us for easier things. He’s preparing us for harder things. He has prepared good works in advance for us to do, and a lot of them will involve a lot of hard work, a lot of courage, and all of them will require faith.

There is a beautiful picture of this in The Horse and His Boy by CS Lewis. It’s part of his Narnia series, and I haven’t read it in over a decade, but my husband reminded me of this truth in that Book - Things didn’t get easer for Shasta they continually got harder to prepare him for the next thing.

“I am the Hermit of the Southern March. And now, my son, waste no time on questions, but obey. The damsel is wounded. Your horses are spent. Rabadash is at this moment finding a ford over the Winding Arrow. If you run now, without a moment’s rest, you will still be in time to warn King Lune.”

Shast’s heart fainted at these words, for he felt he had no strength left. And he writhed inside at what seemed the cruelty and unfairness of the demand. He had not yet learned that if you do one good deed your reward usually is to be set to do another and harder and better one. But all he said out loud was:

“Where is the King?”

The Hermit turned and pointed with his staff. “Look,” he said. “there is another gate, right opposite to the one you entered by. Open it and go straight ahead: always straight ahead, over level or steep, over smooth or rough, over dry or wet. I know by my art that you will find King Lune straight ahead. But run, run: always run.”

-C.S. Lewis, The Horse and His Boy

That You May Know Me Better There (Tumblr Account) by Heather

Article: https://elizajanelewisgirl.tumblr.com/post/132416308536/the-horse-and-his-boy-the-harder-task

Personally, I think the whole story revolves around this moment. I think all of us have come to this moment in our journey of life and faith, or perhaps we believe that a moment will come, when we think we have arrived, when we’re finished, or when we’ve earned a rest. But the truth is that as long as we are alive, we’re not done. The farther we come it doesn’t get easier. Instead we’re given the harder task. God is not preparing us for easier things. He’s preparing us for bigger and better and harder things. When we come to this realization, like Shasta, we feel dashed. We “writhe” and the unfairness of it all. We feel we have no strength left. And yet we find that we do. It is when he’s given this harder task that we see just how far Shasta has come. He doesn’t voice any of these frustrations. He doesn’t balk at the task. He only says, “Where is the King?”

Be Strong and Courageous

Recently I was reading in Joshua and Moses had passed the mantle on to Joshua. He was the next leader and after 40 years of wandering, after slavery before that. . . it was time to enter the promise land. This is where we can miss it - this is where we can be thinking - easy does follow hard! All Joshua had to do was walk into his inheritance.

Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be frightened, and do not be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.” Joshua 1:9

Great blessings often come through hard work, tasks, and even trials.

A Few Reminders in the Midst of Hard

When we go through trials we can remember:

  • Who God is

  • His commandments and truths

  • That he is strengthening us, building us and refining us

  • He is preparing us for His good works

  • He will never leave us and He loves us

  • When we die, we will be with the Lord and he will say to his beloved”well done good and faithful servant.”

SPF 207: The Truth About Modesty

Modesty is a hot topic in the Christian world, but often the heart of the issue is overlooked. Today I am sharing a biblical perspective on modesty that I never heard in youth group.

Modesty

Modesty is about worshipping and honoring God.

It’s honoring

⁃God’s commands

⁃God’s design

⁃Delighting in it all

God’s desire is that they would have this heart full of worship always that it might go well with them. A heart full of worship of God desires to honor the Lord and not self. This is a blessing and it goes well with this person and their descendants!

The problem is we often don’t believe God or are tempted to think there’s a better way. Self worship will deny the supremacy of God and fill us with excuses and lies that make our needs and desire paramount.

“We have to obey God regardless of the current fashions which surround us. God has commanded us to be outwardly as well as inwardly modest . . . and he actually never said that it’s because of the men. Frankly, that may not be the point at all – think of that very odd verse which tells us to wear our hair a certain way “because of the angels.” We may not actually be as in-the-know as we think we are regarding God’s greater purposes. God never gave us a “here’s why” argument on the modesty question – he just gave us a command. We don’t need to be modest “so that the men won’t sin” – we need to be modest so that WE’RE not in sin. We don’t need to be modest to please the Christian men (or women), we need to be modest to please God. So I think that as we pursue modesty, the biggest question should be whether God is pleased with our outfit, not whether we will cause anyone to stumble, or whose fault it will be if they do. The question is whether or not we are being faithful with what God has asked of us.” - Rebekah Merkle Femina blog

Modesty is more than dress - it’s also an attitude.

The woman Folly is loud; she is seductive and knows nothing. Proverbs 9:13

She seduces the simple that pass by and those who turn to her find death.

Immodesty in our actions which come out as loud, seductive, self pleasing, is a path to death.

“I desire then that in every place the men should pray, lifting holy hands without anger or quarreling; likewise also that women should adorn themselves in respectable apparel, with modesty and self-control, not with braided hair and gold or pearls or costly attire, but with what is proper for women who profess godliness—with good works.” 1 Timothy 2:8-10

"Women who profess the Christian religion, must be modest in apparel, not affecting gaudiness, gaiety, or costliness. Good works are the best ornament; these are, in the sight of God, of great price. Modesty and neatness are more to be consulted in garments than elegance and fashion. And it would be well if the professors of serious godliness were wholly free from vanity in dress. They should spend more time and money in relieving the sick and distressed, than in decorating themselves and their children. To do this in a manner unsuitable to their rank in life, and their profession of godliness, is sinful. These are not trifles, but Divine commands. The best ornaments for professors of godliness, are good works." - Matthew Henry
