SPF 155: Some Other Gospel

Something is in the air among Christians lately. The Gospel is being minimized, water down, and neglected. There is only one Gospel and it is the power of God for the salvation of those who believe. Today we are going to look at a few threats to the Gospel and how it really is the saving grace we all need right now and forever.

Some Other Gospel

Galatians 1:6-9

I am astonished that you are so quickly deserting him who called you in the grace of Christ and are turning to a different gospel— not that there is another one, but there are some who trouble you and want to distort the gospel of Christ. But even if we or an angel from heaven should preach to you a gospel contrary to the one we preached to you, let him be accursed. As we have said before, so now I say again: If anyone is preaching to you a gospel contrary to the one you received, let him be accursed.

The Gospel

  • The Good News of atonement through Jesus Christ

  • The Power of God for our salvation

  • Delivers us from the evil age

  • Transforms us

To those who promote or teach another gospel: anathema

Let them be accursed = devoted to destruction, eternally condemned

Why used “anathema”?

  • First because it destroys the nature of atonement.

  • Second, it’s serious because souls are at stake.

  • Third because there is only one Gospel and it’s the gospel of Jesus Christ - any thing extra or added is a distortion and absolutely troubling.

False Teachers, some other Gospel = troubling or agitating

Jesus is the solution. Souls are at stake. Anything extra muddles the truth and potency of the truth.

Scripture is clear that humanity’s only hope is found in the Gospel of Christ and is far reaching to change a person, a culture, a nation, a world. It is more than just a pass to heaven. It indeed atones for our sins, grants us justification before God, but it also works in us sanctification which is conforming to the light and life of Christ.

I think two reasons we can minimize the gospel and really trouble ourselves by potentially turning to another gospel is

  • Trusting in our hearts

  • And being fooled by Satan

Our hearts can be troublesome because Jeremiah 17:9 says:

The heart is deceitful above all things,

and desperately sick;

who can understand it?

Two things about our hearts - it is desperately sick - another translation says desperately wicked. And it is deceitful.  Here we learn that the human heart is the root cause of wickedness in this world. A wicked heart causes us to do wicked things and therefore there is wickedness in this world.

Dr. D Blair Smith of Table Talk magazine said, “if there is going to be any lasting spiritual remedy for humanity, it must address the root problem - our desperately wicked hearts.”

“Scripture never says a cleansed heart cannot sin. Just look at David. But unlike a wicked heart that doesn’t know it’s own sickness, the heart cleansed by the blood of Christ knows it need to - and wants to - grow in the grace of Christ. The Christian knows there are no inherent resources for this growth but only comes as we receive good teaching from the Word of God and the Spirit writes that very Word on our hearts.” Dr. D Blair Smith

Hebrews 8:10 says

“For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel

after those days, declares the Lord:

I will put my laws into their minds,

and write them on their hearts,

and I will be their God,

and they shall be my people.”

Another reason the gospel is minimized is because of Satan.

2 Corinthians 11:14-15 And no wonder, for even Satan disguises himself as an angel of light.  So it is no surprise if his servants, also, disguise themselves as servants of righteousness. Their end will correspond to their deeds.

I think Satan is crafting deception, making it look like light - but selling a false gospel to Christians in the form of things like behavior reform or moralistic therapeutic deism.

“We must get our bearings in God’s Word before we try to discern what is good or false everywhere. When we don’t, ignorance is compounded by ignorance, darkness by darkness. Of all the many and varied times in history when Christians shone brightly - this is our our time to walk as children children of light, refusing to partner with the disobedient, but instead exposing the unfruitful works of darkness (Ephesians 5:11). We have the light of Christ - who is the Word of God. We live by THAT powerful word, not empty ones.” - Abigail Dodds

Satan may masquerade as an angel of light but he is darkness and what does darkness have to do with the light? Whatever the issue, whatever the problem, whatever the need - know that the Gospel of Jesus Christ atones, justifies, and transforms.

One of the pastors at our church said "There is only one Gospel and we have no right to mess with it. Our problem is that we no longer know what the Gospel is.”

Colossians 3 gives us a look at the transforming work of the Gospel.

Faithful War Edition 001

Andy and Lauren combine podcasts for Faithful War!

She Proves Faithful + He Makes War = Faithful War

Definition is good. Definition is great. We want things to be what they are, not what they aren’t.

Culture is redefining words. Who has the ultimate authority over meaning.

Logos - the word for Jesus “Jesus is the Word” meaning He is the Truth, the ultimate reality, all that is true, beautiful and good. We want to be accurate with what God says it is.

Redefining happens when we want to feel better about things we are doing or want. Redefining gives us permission. If we can redefine sin, then we can live according to how we want to live.

Takeaways:

  1. Use words accurately.

  2. As the world descends into chaos, we can be there to preach the Gospel which is Truth.

  3. Use words the God uses.

Truth = conformity

John 17:17

Some Favorite Takeaways:

“Take all of Scripture in and let it best order our life.”

“Believe God’s Word as the standard. Scripture is the only way given for humans to live, and by the grace of God we’ve been made alive in Christ to see the beauty in that. [So] don’t let the world cloud that beauty. Being a homemaker is an honorable thing.”

"Our freedom and fulfillment come from being in Christ - so seek Christ in doing all this and bring him glory as we steward our homes with joy.”

"How we respond is always going to be guided by how highly we view God. So let it roll off your back when the world decides to drop it’s unnecessary comments on how you’ve decided to allow God’s Word to order your life.”

“We shouldn’t be praising God’s Word and lifting it up highly to our children if we are not willing to actually submit to it joyfully and live our lives out the way it tells us to."

History

When you look at history really it is a collection of stories of people who honored God or dishonored God. It is a story of people who submitted to The good authority of our creator, and those who denied it and rebelled against it. We see this with the rise and fall of kingdoms, and even the rise and fall of people.

History is a gift to us for many reasons:

  • History gives us perspective, and allows us to see an outcome of a way of life.

  • History is a gift because it’s a reminder of everyone’s destiny.

  • History allows us to see the hand of God at work.

  • History spurs us on to stay the course

  • Knowing History reminds us that we are not void of responsibility

Without the Bible is a lens in which to view everything through, we cannot accurately understand problems or solutions. The more we know our Bibles, the better we can understand what is going on in the world and what to do about it.

God gave us the Word to read and the World to read.

We need to read the Word first in order to read the World correctly.

If we read the World first, we will read the Word incorrectly.

Scripture gives us a biblical worldview which serves as a lens through which to interpret what is right and wrong in history.

“The study of history is the study of how nations have answered the following questions of allegiance: who is ultimately in charge and whose law should be obeyed?” - America, In God’s Providence textbook

Rachel Jankovic Instagram Quote: “The Christian ideal has not been tried and found wanting. It has been found difficult; and left untried.”

The Cure For Chaos

We know according to Scripture that we are no longer under the law but under grace.

What does this mean:

  • This means we do not need to uphold God’s holy law in order to be blameless before him and be approved by own works

  • It means God gives us grace through his son Jesus Christ who did uphold God’s holy law and was blameless and approved by his works.

What it does not mean:

  • That the Law is void and meaningless.

  • It also does not mean that obedience to the law doesn’t matter. Jesus came to fulfill the law, not make it void.

When it comes to God’s law, God’s standard, God gets to determine what the standard is. God gets to decide what is holy conduct.

God’s standard truly brings order and dissolves chaos.

When Christians love God‘s moral law, and look to glorify him in following it, through the mercy and help of the gospel and the Holy Spirit, we are a grace to our families, to the church, to our community, and to the world.

Sometimes Christians decide that Gods standard is no longer is applicable = antinomianism

Antinomianism leads to Secularism

Secularism

Secularism separates people from the Lordship of Christ. It excludes God from life, excludes God from laws, from justice, from education, from morality. The undercurrent of secularism declares that there is no God therefore I must be God. That’s when new definitions of what is right and wrong what is just and unjust begin to develop. Secularism teaches us to do what feels right according to each individual person, because they are the ones in charge.

So what is the result of secularism? The result is chaos.

When we divorce our lives our culture I said our society from God, the result is chaos.

What is the antidote? What restores us to order? What is the solution?

We must return to the rightful king.

When we return to the king there is order.

Here are some verses that show us the way out of chaos:

James 4:6-10

Proverbs 2:6-15

Ecclesiastes 12:13

Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded.

Pastor Qualifications and Duties:

Titus 1

For an overseer, as God's steward, must be above reproach. He must not be arrogant or quick-tempered or a drunkard or violent or greedy for gain, but hospitable, a lover of good, self-controlled, upright, holy, and disciplined. He must hold firm to the trustworthy word as taught, so that he may be able to give instruction in sound doctrine and also to rebuke those who contradict it.

1 Peter 5

So I exhort the elders among you, as a fellow elder and a witness of the sufferings of Christ, as well as a partaker in the glory that is going to be revealed: shepherd the flock of God that is among you, exercising oversight, not under compulsion, but willingly, as God would have you; not for shameful gain, but eagerly; not domineering over those in your charge, but being examples to the flock. And when the chief Shepherd appears, you will receive the unfading crown of glory.

Hebrews 13:17

Obey your leaders and submit to them, for they are keeping watch over your souls, as those who will have to give an account. Let them do this with joy and not with groaning, for that would be of no advantage to you.

Come Alongside Your Pastor

How can we come along side these shepherds of God’s people?

No. 1 Pray for Your Pastor

  1. Pray that God would make their path’s straight (Proverbs 3:5-6).

  2. Pray that God would protect them from their flesh, from the world, from the devil.

  3. Pray that God would open doors to preach the Gospel.

  4. Pray that God would give them boldness and clarity to proclaim the Gospel

  5. Pray that God would give them wisdom.

No. 2 Don’t Gossip or Grumble against them

(You can bring concerns to them.)

No. 3 Come alongside them by using your giftings to share the Gospel

  • Bring your ideas to your pastor

  • Get wisdom and get training

  • Don’t project your mission on them and expect them to take up your ministry ideas and passions (Acts 6)

“Pastors need the saints’ prayers because they are ever the object of the flaming arrows of the evil one. In addition, the world is eager to run them over at any opportunity. As one of my seminary professors so illustratively put it, “Ministers have a bull’s eye on their backs and footprints up their chests.” - Nicholas Batzig

How Do We Discover God's Will for Our Lives?

God has not left us in the dark to grope around and hopefully land on what we are supposed to be doing. The revealed things belong to us and our children! God has given us the Bible provides us with those revealed things and His Holy Spirit that teaches how to rightly apply it to our lives.

Deuteronomy 29:29 says:

The secret things belong to the Lord our God, but the things that are revealed belong to us and to our children forever, that we may do all the words of this law.

Two things on this:

  1. We need to watch ourselves that we are not so eager to discover the secret things of God with no desire for God’s revealed will for our life. He has given us an entire Bible that we might know Him and His will, but we can find ourselves thinking those things are not relevant, or not as exciting or not applicable.

  2. The Bible is full of commands and principles and precepts to guide us into making wise decisions on things God has not directly revealed to us. That’s why the Psalm 119:105 says your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.

John Newton: How to Know God’s Will

https://webcache.googleusercontent.com/search?q=cache:lDbpK0V1gHoJ:https://chapellibrary.org:8443/api/books/download%3Fcode%3Dhtkg%26format%3Dpdf+&cd=1&hl=en&ct=clnk&gl=us&client=safari

What are some of these mistakes that are made when trying to know the will of God?

  1. Casting Lots - Newton reminds us that there is no prescription or promise regarding casting lots to make our decisions now.

  2. Dipping in the Scriptures - which basically means flipping through the Bible and reading a verse out of context to try and determine God’s will. Newton reminds us that this a practice of heathens - or unbelievers - would do. He said, “They grounded their persuasions of what they ought to do, or of what should befall them, according to the passage they happened to open.”

    1. “Sortes Virgilanae” with is actually Latin for divination by casting lots.

  3. Remarkable Dreams - “A remarkable dream has sometimes been thought as  DECISIVE as any of the forgoing methods of knowing the will of God. That many wholesome and seasonable admonitions have been received in dreams, I willingly allow. But though they may be occasionally noticed, to play a great attention to dreams, especially to be guided by them, to form our sentiments, conduct, or expectations upon them, is superstitious and dangerous. The promises are not made to those who dream but to those who watch.”

Newton sums up these errors by saying:

“Upon the whole, though the Lord may give to some persons, upon some occasions, a hint or encouragement out of the COMMON WAY, yet expressly to look for and seek His direction in such things as I have mentioned, is unscriptural and ensnaring."

So how does the Lord Guide?

How can we expect Him to guide us?

Newton answers this question with “In general, the Lord guides and directs His people by affording them answer to prayer, the light of His Holy spirit, which enables them to understand and love the Scriptures.”

“The word of God is not to be used as a lottery, nor is it designed to instruct us by shreds and scraps versus taken out of context, which, detached from their proper places, I have no determinate importance. Rather, the word of God is to furnish us with just principles and right apprehensions, to regulate our judgments and affections, and thereby to influence and direct or conduct.

The word of God dwells richly in them (They who study the Scriptures,) as a preservative from error, light to their feet, and a spring of strength and consolation. By treasuring of the doctrines, precepts, promises, examples, and expectations of scripture in their minds, and daily comparing themselves with the rule by which they walk, they grow into a habitual frame of spiritual wisdom, and acquire a gracious taste, which enables them to judge the right and wrong with the degree of readiness and certainty, as a musical ear judges of sounds. And they are seldom mistaken, because they are influenced by the love of Christ, which rules in their hearts, and buy a regard to the glory of God, which is the great object they have in view.” - John Newton

Helpful questions we can ask when we are making decisions when scripture isn’t complete clear:

(from Sinclair Ferguson’s sermon on Renewing Your Mind: https://renewingyourmind.org/2020/05/12/discovering-gods-will)

  1. Is it lawful?

  2. 1 cor 6:12 - Is this action beneficial? To me? To others?

  3. Will it be enslaving?

  4. Is this consistent with Christ’s Lordship (1 Cor 6:19-20)?

  5. 1 Cor 10:33 Will this be helpful to others?

  6. 1 Cor 11:1 Is this course of action going to be consistent with biblical example?

  7. 1 Cor 10:31 “Is this going to be consistent with the promotion of the Glory of God? - what promotes the glory of God will always be His will.” - Sinclair Ferguson

SPF 148: How to Live Well in a Fallen World

There is so much going on right now all over the world. Liberties being stripped, people scared, documentaries coming out, judges being unconstitutional, conspiracy theories, corruption, the list goes on. One thing is for sure, the Word is fallen and we are living in it. How can we as Christians live well in a fallen world?

2 Corinthians 5:1-5

Groaning:

Scripture tells us that as believers we will groan with sorrow under the burden of life. “For wile we are still in this tent, we groan, being burdened.”

Now without Christ, this would be a tragic life indeed.

But the groaning actually serves a great purpose. We groan that we would be further clothed and that what is mortal may be swallowed up by LIFE! By life!!

Truth No. 1

  • That we would groan and greatly look forward to being clothed in a glorified body

Joel Beeke in his family worship bible guide writes this instruction and encouragement: Meditate on the future realities of the Gospel. Have you learned by grace to groan to be clothed with a glorified body? Take time to consider all that awaits the children of God. If you have the Spirit all his is yours in earnest already.”

Whom have I in heaven but you? And there is nothing on earth that I desire besides you. My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever. Psalm 73:25-26

2 Corinthians 5:6-11

Because Life awaits us, because we have the Spirit guaranteeing what God is preparing for us, we can have COURAGE.

Good courage.

Courage gives us the mindset to encounter danger and difficult times with a firmness, without fear or depression of spirits. We can approach them with valor, boldness, and resolution. We have fortitude, but a fortitude, as Webster’s 1828 dictionary says, implies patience to bear continued suffering.

Truth No. 2

  • To make it our aim to please God.

That word please means to be ambitious - think of all thing things you are ambitious about . . . is one of them pleasing God? And what a motivating factor - that we will appear before the judgement seat of Christ which Paul calls the “terror of the Lord” in the very next verse!

2 Corinthians 5:12-21

We no longer live for ourselves but for Christ who died for us and was raised!

Truth No. 3

  • Remember we are ministers of reconciliation.

Reconciliation means that there is a quarrel. Sin has made a breach and now there is separation between God and man. We need to remember all that Christ has done for us -reconciling us to God, not counting our trespasses, our rebellious acts against us, but forgiving us through His sacrifice.

We are God’s ambassadors for Christ. So we implore them - in light of God’s incredible mercy, in light of your limited time in the flesh, and in light of the coming terror of the Lord - be reconciled to God.

So in all of the groaning - look heavenward, please God, share Christ.

By all means, engage in this world. Stand up for what is right. But in all of this, may our ambition to please God and share Christ be under-girding it all.

Sinners Gonna Sin

“Your whole self ruled by the flesh was put off when you were circumcised by Christ” Colossians 2:11

“For what I want to do I do not do, but what I hate I do.” Romans 7

What about those sins that we continually struggle with. Sometimes they are called besetting sin or sins, meaning that same sin is always so close.

Just because something is a besetting sin in our life does not mean it gives us permission to not address it, or go easy on it, or tuck it under a rug and pretend it’s nothing. It is an opportunity to continue to grow in the Lord, an opportunity lean into our freedom in Christ, and puts us at the throne of His grace continually.

So what do we do about sin in our lives?

No. 1: Take off the Old Self and Put on the New Self

We are to take off the old self, and put on the new self.

Colossians 3

The things listed here, are evil. And God calls us to put them to death. The Greek word, is neekroō nee-krah-o

Which means to deaden, to subdue, and to mortify.

Colossians 3: 12

So scripture does not instruct us just to put off the things of the sinful nature, but also put on the things that are fitting to the Christian because we are beloved by God and holy and chosen.

Matthew Henry commentary describes it as "we must not only put off anger and wrath, but we must put on compassion and kindness, not only cease to do evil, but learn to do well, not only not to hurt any, but do what good we can to all".

No. 2 A few truths about putting off besetting sins.

1. Here’s the facts in 1 John - we still sin. But Christ purifies us.

2. We need to know and grow in the understand of what sin is and the gravity of it.

“Sin is something that stands in opposition to everything that God is in everything that he desires. This is enmity with God this is fighting against God’s purposes in our lives.” - Paul Washer

3. Being in the Scriptures is a grace to us - Psalm 119:11 says, “I have hidden you word in my heart that I might not sin against you.”

4. Confess that sin to the Lord. Confession is agreeing with God that what we did or are doing is against what he is commanded we are acknowledging and agreeing that he is God and his commands are right and holy.

5. That God is a good God and scripture says he gives good gifts. Sin Is deceptive, Satan is a roaring lion looking to devour, he wants to steal kill and destroy. When we are tempted by sin we must remember that God is good and does not with all the good things from us.

Two Things that are a Perfect Peace for us:

  1. Trust God & Strengthen our Minds

    Isaiah 26:3-4

    Colossians 3:1-4

    • WHY God is trustworthy

    • He is the everlasting Rock; a firm foundation for us to stand on in the midst of the unknown

    • When we know Who God is it builds up our faith which gives us peace.

    • Strengthen our minds means to make our minds stay on God. To stay means to lean on. Beware of what our minds are feasting on.

    • Set our minds on eternal things - like the fact that our lives are now hidden in Christ - nothing can separate us from Him!

  2. God Reigns & Makes His Glory Known

    Isaiah 26:7-9

    Philippians 4:6-7

    • God is a kind and good God who saves us from our sin, gives us new minds, and makes level our ways

    • Wait on the Lord. It’s a humbling position as His creation; waiting on the Lord is a place and time to develop faith.

    • While we wait we make His name and glory the desire of our souls.

    • The Truth really shouts in pain and suffering.

    • Repent when you have anxiety

    • Ask God for His peace
