SPF 225: Memento Mori (& Celebrating with Skeletons?)
Momento Mori is a Latin phrase that means, “Remember, you must die.” As a Christian should we be thinking about death? If so, why and does it make us overly morbid? And should I get a skeleton? History says, it might be a good idea. Today I’m discussing all this and more.

Momento Mori
Use this time of year to reflect on death and live in light of the truth.
The origins and certainty of death
Jesus Christ has come to save us from the penalty of death
Let the certainty of death make us live to God and not ourselves.
For the Christian, death means glorification and heaven, for the unsaved it is eternal misery.
“Thy death is not God's primal ordinance, but it is a penalty brought upon thee on account of the transgression of thy first parent. Thou wouldst have been immortal if Adam had been immaculate. Sin, thou art the mother of Death! Adam thou hast digged the graves of thy children!
We die because we have sinned. How this should make us hate sin! How we should detest it because the wages of sin is death!”
For the Christian, Take Heart!
“What have I to lose by Death? The tumult of the people and the strife of tongues. A joyous loss indeed! To the believer Death is gain, unalloyed gain. Do we leave our friends by Death? We shall see better friends, and more numerous up yonder, in the general assembly and church of the first-born, whose names are written in heaven. Do we leave our house and comforts?" There is a house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens." Do we lose our life? Ah no, we gain a better far; for remember that we live to die, we die to live, and then are live to die no more. Without any fraction of loss, death to the believer is a glorious gain. It is greatly wise, then, for a Christian to talk with his last hours, because those last hours are the beginning of his glory. He leaves off to sin and begins to be perfect; he ceases to suffer and begins to be happy; he renounces all his poverty and shamed and begins to be rich and honored.”
For the Uncoverted, Repent!
“But to you who are ungodly and unconverted, Death has only this black side. It is the leaving of all you have, and of all you love. It is an entering upon eternal poverty, everlasting shame, and infinite woe. Oh that ye were wise, ye careless sinners—oh that ye were wise, that ye understood this, and would consider your latter end.”
SPF 224: Glorification & What Will Heaven Be Like?
Charles Spurgeon once preached "WE cannot too often turn our thoughts heavenward, for this is one of the great cures for worldliness.” Today I am discussing glorification and what happens when a Christian dies. How does the teaching of glorification impact our daily living?

Glorification
It is a blessed and much anticipated time by those of us who sin and are Christians (so, every Christian) where God will remove all remaining sin from us for our eternal state.
Romans 8:29-30 says
29 For those whom he foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, in order that he might be the firstborn among many brothers. 30 And those whom he predestined he also called, and those whom he called he also justified, and those whom he justified he also glorified.
The predestined are called, and the called are both justified and are certain to be finally glorified. The past tense of glorified means that from God’s standpoint the work is as good as done. He will complete it as planned.
London Baptist Confession
CHAPTER 31; OF THE STATE OF MAN AFTER DEATH, AND OF THE RESURRECTION OF THE DEAD
Paragraph 1. The bodies of men after death return to dust, and see corruption;1 but their souls, which neither die nor sleep, having an immortal subsistence, immediately return to God who gave them.2 The souls of the righteous being then made perfect in holiness, are received into paradise, where they are with Christ, and behold the face of God in light and glory, waiting for the full redemption of their bodies;3 and the souls of the wicked are cast into hell; where they remain in torment and utter darkness, reserved to the judgment of the great day;4 besides these two places, for souls separated from their bodies, the Scripture acknowledgeth none.
First the Westminster Confession of Faith
The souls of believers are at their death made perfect in holiness, and do immediately pass into glory;1 and their bodies, being still united to Christ,2 do rest in their graves till the resurrection.3
Luke 23:43. And Jesus said unto him, Verily I say unto thee, To day shalt thou be with me in paradise.
Luke 16:23. And in hell he lift up his eyes, being in torments, and seeth Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom.
Philippians 1:23. For I am in a strait betwixt two, having a desire to depart, and to be with Christ; which is far better.
2 Corinthians 5:6-8. Therefore we arealways confident, knowing that, whilst we are at home in the body, we are absent from the Lord: (for we walk by faith, not by sight:) we are confident, I say, and willing rather to be absent from the body, and to be present with the Lord.1 Thessalonians 4:14. For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so them also which sleep in Jesus will God bring with him.
Romans 8:23. And not only they, but ourselves also, which have the firstfruits of the Spirit, even we ourselves groan within ourselves, waiting for the adoption, to wit, the redemption of our body.
1 Thessalonians 4:14. For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so them also which sleep in Jesus will God bring with him.
What will heaven be like?
Revelation 7:15-17
“Therefore they are before the throne of God,
and serve him day and night in his temple;
and he who sits on the throne will shelter them with his presence.
They shall hunger no more, neither thirst anymore;
the sun shall not strike them,
nor any scorching heat.
For the Lamb in the midst of the throne will be their shepherd,
and he will guide them to springs of living water,
and God will wipe away every tear from their eyes.”
Here we see eternal bliss is where there is no hunger, no thirst, no sun to strike us or any scorching heat. Rather we are in the midst of the Lamb who abundantly supplies all our needs so we won’t even know a need anymore or struggle or temptation nor any affliction or evil against us.
“The Bliss of the Glorified”
Charles Spurgeon sermon on August 13th 1871
https://www.blueletterbible.org/Comm/spurgeon_charles/sermons/3499.cfm
"WE cannot too often turn our thoughts heavenward, for this is one of the great cures for worldliness. The way to liberate our souls from the bonds that tie us to earth is to strengthen the cords that kind us to heaven. You will think less of this poor little globe when you think more of the world to come.”
"And oh! what hunger and thirst there has been on earth by those of tender and large heart for a fit object of love! I mean not now the common thing called "love," but the friendship which is in man's heart, and sends out its tendrils wanting something to which to cling. We must-we are born and created for that very purpose-we must live together, we cannot develop ourselves alone. And oftentimes a lonely spirit has yearned for a brother's ear, into which to pour its sorrows; and doubtless many a man has been brought to destruction and been confined to the lunatic asylum whose reason might have been saved had there been some sympathetic spirit, some kind, gentle heart that would have helped to bear his burden. Oh! the hunger and the thirst of many a soul after a worthy object of confidence. But they hunger and they thirst, up there, no more. Their love is all centred on their Saviour. Their confidence, which they reposed in him on earth, is still in him. He is their bosom's Lord, their heart's Emperor, and they are satisfied, and, wrapped up in him, they hunger and they thirst no more.”
"On earth it is good for saints to hunger and to thirst spiritually, but up there they have done even with that blessed hunger and that blessed thirst. Today, beloved, some of us are hungering after holiness. Oh! what would I not give to be holy, to be rid of sin, of every evil thing about me! My eyes-ah! adieu sweet light, if I might also say, "Adieu sin! "My mouth-ah! well would I be content to be dumb if I might preach by a perfect life on earth! There is no faculty I know of that might not be cheerfully surrendered if the surrender of it would deprive us of sin. But they never thirst for holiness in heaven, for this excellent reason, that they are without fault before the throne of God. “
"What heats of affliction some here have passed through! Why there are some here who are seldom free from physical pain. There are many of the best of God's children that, if they get an hour without pain, are joyful indeed. There are others that have had a great fight of affliction Through poverty they have fought hard. They have been industrious, but somehow or other God has marked them out for the scant tables and the thread-worn garments. They are the children of poverty, and the furnace heat is very hot about them. With others it has been repeated deaths of those they have loved. Ah! how sad is the widow's case! How deep the grief of the fatherless! How great the sorrow of bereaved parents! Sometimes the arrows of God fly one after the other; first one falls and then another until we think we shall hardly have one left. These are the heats of the furnace of affliction. “

Sanctification
Sanctification is a process of conforming us to Christ and this is a doctrine that impacts our every day living. It’s a continual work of the Lord in our lives where the lusts of our hearts are being weakened and mortified each day and we replace them with holy living prescribed in Scripture.
Westminster Shorter Catechism #35 says that sanctification is the work of God’s whereby we are renewed in the whole man after the image of God and are enabled more and more to die unto sin and live unto righteousness.
The Gospel is so rich.
What is this purpose in opposing sin?
Sanctification is not just to say no to sin but a calling to be conformed to Christ - to holiness! And holiness can seem so stuffy and prime and not exciting until you realize the beauty and goodness that blooms in holiness. Holiness isn’t about pride of life or being better than others - it’s about conformity to Christ and walking in His commands which are love. I just read every Scripture that compares the old nature with the new nature and think - holiness is the better way!
How Does the Teaching of Sanctification Impact Our Daily Living?
Number 1: It leads to beauty in our lives and homes. A submission to Christ and conformity to His ways, little by little, will only make us and our surroundings more sweet and more fragrant because Christ in us will be all the more evident at each work of throwing off sin.
Number 2: The teaching of sanctification reminds us to be in the Word and helps us become wise and discerning Christians when it comes to what is holy living and how to walk in the Spirit instead of the flesh.
Number 3: It helps us is to remember that God is faithful and he will do it and what is it? Sanctification. He will help us overcome our sins. Some will fall away quite easily, and some are what is called “besetting sins” the ones we struggle with continually. It is a work of God, but a work of God in us to know what is holy and to walk in it.
Morning and Evening - Charles Spurgeon
https://spurgeonmae.com/devotional/2012-08-16-1
"Ourselves also, which have the firstfruits of the Spirit."
Romans 8:23
“Present possession is declared. At this present moment we have the first fruits of the Spirit. We have repentance, that gem of the first water; faith, that priceless pearl; hope, the heavenly emerald; and love, the glorious ruby. We are already made "new creatures in Christ Jesus," by the effectual working of God the Holy Ghost. This is called the firstfruit because it comes first. As the wave-sheaf was the first of the harvest, so the spiritual life, and all the graces which adorn that life, are the first operations of the Spirit of God in our souls. The firstfruits were the pledge of the harvest. As soon as the Israelite had plucked the first handful of ripe ears, he looked forward with glad anticipation to the time when the wain should creak beneath the sheaves. So, brethren, when God gives us things which are pure, lovely, and of good report, as the work of the Holy Spirit, these are to us the prognostics of the coming glory. The firstfruits were always holy to the Lord, and our new nature, with all its powers, is a consecrated thing. The new life is not ours that we should ascribe its excellence to our own merit; it is Christ's image and creation, and is ordained for his glory. But the firstfruits were not the harvest, and the works of the Spirit in us at this moment are not the consummation the perfection is yet to come. We must not boast that we have attained, and so reckon the wave-sheaf to be all the produce of the year: we must hunger and thirst after righteousness, and pant for the day of full redemption. Dear reader, this evening open your mouth wide, and God will fill it. Let the boon in present possession excite in you a sacred avarice for more grace. Groan within yourself for higher degrees of consecration, and your Lord will grant them to you, for he is able to do exceeding abundantly above what we ask or even think.”

What is Justification?
Justification is about justice.
You work and you earn.
And unfortunately for humans, we are really good at the work of sin which earns us the wages of death according to Romans 3:23.
It is justice for us to receive death for the work of our sin.
Everyone is born under Adam as our federal head. What does that mean? It means we are born as sinners. Adam is our representative and we will never be able to fulfill the moral works necessary to be made righteous. The only way for us to be justified is through the works of someone who can fulfill the whole law on our behalf - and not just that, but takes the punishment for our sins upon himself - and that is the person of Jesus Christ.
Galatians 3:13 Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us—for it is written, “Cursed is everyone who is hanged on a tree”—
We frequently and rightly remember that it is An act of God’s free grace.
But it also was a just curse of God that led to our justification.
What we need to think of when we think of the cross is two fold - yes - it is an act of God’s free grace, but it is also an act of God’s justice.
At the cross we see both the wrath of God and the grace of God in one place.
How does knowing about justification impact our daily living?
Number 1: Gives us assurance of salvation
Justification is the assurance that what Jesus accomplished on the cross is enough. Not you. You are not enough. And that’s a good thing. That means our confidence is not in ourselves or our behavior or our thoughts.
Number 2: Allows us to live out of our new identity
Justification means we are in Christ. Our identity has changes like Galatians 2:20 says: I have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me. And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.
Number 3: Allows us to serve and love others
Justification is a unifying factor.
The redeemed are literally family. We are united in Christ. We serve him together. Same God, same salvation, same commands.
Second, we use our justification, our liberty and deliverance from sin to SERVE ONE ANOTHER

Life Hack: Screen!
Here are the screens I bought to help keep the flies and bugs out (contains affiliate link):
The Prudent Woman
The foolish home vs the home of wisdom:
Proverbs 19:13-14 says
“A foolish son is ruin to his father,
and a wife's quarreling is a continual dripping of rain.
House and wealth are inherited from fathers,
but a prudent wife is from the Lord.”
What is prudence?
The Hebrew word used in this passage is sakal which is translated as understanding, wise, consider, skillful; having circumspection which - I love the 1828 Webster’s dictionary definition which says: Caution; attention to all the facts and circumstances of a case, and to the natural or probable consequences of a measure, with a view to a correct course of conduct, or to avoid danger.
Prudence is such a great word that means so much.
It means to look upon and have insight; to give attention to consider, ponder to act wisely; a prudent wife really is from the Lord - first because it is God who acts in us to be prudent, and two because it is a true gift the that household.
Proverbs 10:19
When words are many, transgression is not lacking,
but whoever restrains his lips is prudent.
Proverbs 12:16
The vexation of a fool is known at once,
but the prudent ignores an insult.
Proverbs 13:16
Every prudent man acts with knowledge,
but a fool flaunts his folly.
Proverbs 14:8
The wisdom of the prudent is to discern his way,
but the folly of fools is deceiving.
Proverbs 14:15
The simple believes everything,
but the prudent gives thought to his steps.

We’ve heard the cry of meaninglessness or vanity of vanities in Ecclesiastes, but does that really mean everything under the sun is meaningless? Here’s my friend’s recipe (I add a little milk or cream to thin it out a bit):
1 cup mayo (watch for inflammatory oils)
1/2 sour cream
1/2 tsp of each: dried chives, dill, parsley
1/4 tsp granulated garlic (or garlic powder)
1/4 tsp dried onion
1/8 tsp salt
1/8 tsp pepper
Milk or cream to thin out.
***Add spices to your taste and enjoy!!***
Vanities of Vanities!
Vanity of vanities says the preacher, vanity of vanities! All is vanity what does a man gain by all the toil at which he toils under the sun. Ecclesiastes 1:2-3
One of the most insightful things that I learned from the book, is that vanity does not mean it’s meaningless but rather a vain repetition repetition that we can’t possibly figure out, but for the Christian God gives us joy in the repetition.
So what is God’s purpose to make life into this inscrutable repetition?
Our humility
God’s Sovereignty
Our joy
“The great Hebrew philosopher who wrote this book called Ecclesiastes calls us to joy, but to a joy which thinks, a joy which does not shrink back from the hard questions. He calls us to meditation, but to a meditation which does not despair. And as he points out repeatedly, shutting off every avenue of escape, only believers can enjoy the vanity which surrounds us on every side.” - Doug Wilson Joy at the End of the Tether

Christian Universalism
First post: https://www.instagram.com/p/CgpJPsGLxav/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link
Spot the Lie: Christian Universalism
Number 1
“Are you saying that people will be saved even if they do not repent and believe.”
“No, only those who repent and confess that Jesus is Lord will be saved - Romans 10:9-10”
The argument is that all people WILL REPENT AND CONFESS that Jesus is Lord and therefore be saved.
Truth: those who God calls will not be able to resist his grace. Who can say no to God? Paul Paul why are you kicking against the goads. God saves people through the repentance of sin and belief in the atoning sacrifice of Jesus Christ His son.
Lie: that one day everyone will repent and believe. This lie allows us to make little of our life and time on earth - what does it matter if I acknowledge or follow God now if eventually I will receive eternal life?
Number 2
“Are you saying Jesus isn’t the only way of salvation?”
“No that would be pluralism.”
Christian universalism teaches that all will eventually be saved through Jesus because Jesus is the savior of all men.
Truth: yes. There is only one way to God the Father which is the forgiveness of our sins through Jesus Christ.
Lie: all will eventually be saved; even if it’s after death.
Number 3
“Are you saying hell doesn’t exist at all?”
“No, hell is real. Universalist hold that hell is not a place of everlasting moment for the sake of causing endless pain. Instead, hell is understood as restorative punishment inflected for the purpose of bring sinners to recognize their need for Christ.”
Truth: Yes - hell is a real, physical place that exists.
Lie: no where does is say there purpose of hell is for the sake of causing endless pain. The purpose of hell is that we have a JUST AND HOLY God who holds all eternal beings in subjection to his ways. His justice is absolutely good too. he Scripture says that all fall short of the glory of God. The Scriptures say that no one is righteous, not even one. The wages of sin is death. Justice must take place or else God would not be holy or good.
And for the Christian, the justice is done through the death of Jesus Christ. “He himself bore our sins in his body on the tree that we might die to sin and live to righteousness. By his wounds you have been healed.” 1 Peter 2:24
Justice has happened through Jesus’s suffering, death and victory through his resurrection.
Hell is justice for those who are left without payment for their treason against God. The purpose of hell is eternal punishment for our treason.
Once more, sin being an infinite evil, deserves an infinite punishment. An infinite punishment is no more than it deserves. Therefore such punishment is just, which was the thing to be proved. There is no evading the force of this reasoning, but by denying that God, the sovereign of the universe, is infinitely glorious, which I presume none of my hearers will venture to do.
- Jonathan Edwards
How kind is God that though we deserve to be eternally punished, that He would make a way for us and it cost His son everything. We did nothing and get everything.
There is nowhere in scripture that says hell is just a temporary place to help people turn and repent. Are they under the authority of Jesus in hell. Yes. Are the repentant? No. They can’t be. Hebrews says after death we face judgement.

Don’t Be the Gullible Woman
A gullible woman is one who is easily deceived.
The gullible woman is led away from fruitfulness by her own lusts driven by discontentment and envy.
The world and it’s desires, which are passing away, are also luring the gullible woman with promises of fulfillment, satisfaction, happiness, and greener pastures.
Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world—the desires of the flesh and the desires of the eyes and pride of life —is not from the Father but is from the world. And the world is passing away along with its desires, but whoever does the will of God abides forever.
1 John 2:15-17
Part of being gullible is to think we cannot mortify sin.
Charles Spurgeon says:
“Vanish forever all thought of indulging the flesh if you would live in the power of your risen Lord. It were ill that a man who is alive in Christ should dwell in the corruption of sin. "Why seek ye the living among the dead?" said the angel to Magdalene. Should the living dwell in the sepulchre? … O Christian, the vows of God are upon you. You are God's priest: act as such. You are God's king: reign over your lusts. You are God's chosen: do not associate with Belial. Heaven is your portion: live like a heavenly spirit, so shall you prove that you have true faith in Jesus, for there cannot be faith in the heart unless there be holiness in the life. “
Two things to Watch Out For
Number 1: Boss Babe
Watch out for the temptation to be fulfilled outside the home by running a business or working.
Watch out for the deception that our skills are better used outside the home.
Watch out for the temptation to chase money and success above family.
Number 2: Not Respecting Our Husbands
Watch out that our husband is the apple tree among the forest of trees.
Watch out to not make our husbands earn respect in order for us to give it to them - we are commanded by God to give respect to our husbands.
Watch out to not be deceived that a critical tongue is the way to a fruitful marriage.

What is patriarchy and should we smash it? Today I’m sharing about biblical patriarchy and how we can prove faithful when we are tempted to believe the patriarchy is toxic.

The Patriarchy
Patriarchy means “father rule.”
With biblical patriarchy, men are leaders of their own household. They have a great responsibility, and role, and providing for and protecting their family, and it is done at the cost of their lives.
Verses:
Ephesians 5:23, 5:25, 6:4
Genesis 2:24
Malachi 2:15
Deuteronomy 6 and 9
God made fathers to rule, and when they are obedient and faithful to the Lord God, there is great blessing.
Can patriarchy turn toxic?
As we have it, all have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God which means even the best husband who desires to honor God, will at times fail at his patriarchal duties or be forgetful, or wander off the path. Of course this affects the entire family, and it is not without consequence. When we sin that usually affects not just ourselves but those around us. The same is for fathers who are not faithful in ruling their family well. This could mean they abdicate responsibility, or they Let the power of being the head of the household go to their head, and abuse their position.
What is our response?
I love the wisdom Doug Wilson offers to the objection that “if you grant this office to men, it will go to their heads, and they will abuse their position. He says first, it is not a nebulous you that grants this position to men, but rather the words of God in scripture. Second when they sin in this position as they certainly do, we should seek to counter such disobedience with more obedience not less obedience. Hypocrisy does not have the power to change the exegesis of any particular passage.”
Biblical patriarchy was designed by God and from His authority patriarchy exists.
Sin doesn’t nullify the offices God has given.
Pray for your husbands and study and apply 1 Peter 3:1-2
Train up the young men in your home to be future godly patriarchs.
Remember that no authority has absolute power or authority.
Christ’s perfection is what we rest our hope on, not on sinful man.
“Patriarchy is inescapable, and our only choice is between men being faithful, for blessing, and then failing, for humiliation and chastisement. The thesis is not that men are good, but rather than men are crucial. When they are crucial and selfish a lot of bad things happen. When they are crucial and obedient a lot of good follows.” - Douglas Wilson

The Duties of Parents (FREE eBook) J.C.Ryle | Monergism: https://www.monergism.com/duties-parents-ebook
I know that you cannot convert your child. I know well that they who are born again are born, not of the will of man, but of God. But I know also that God says expressly, "Train up a child in the way he should go," and that He never laid a command on man which He would not give man grace to perform. And I know, too, that our duty is not to stand still and dispute, but to go forward and obey. It is just in the going forward that God will meet us. The path of obedience is the way in which He gives the blessing. We have only to do as the servants were commanded at the marriage feast in Cana, to fill the water-pots with water, and we may safely leave it to the Lord to turn that water into wine. - J.C. Ryle
