Encouragement for Moms - From Kendra Paulton
Here are a few personal takeaways from my time with Kendra:
One way we can be a help to other moms is asking how they are doing, seeing if there is a physical way we can help, and then praying for them right there
Our kids mirror and mimic us
We are our children’s first example of a Christian
The outcome is not our responsibility, but what we pour into our children is
There is always enough time in the day to do what God wants us to do that day
Matthew 11:28 Do not reject God’s offer for rest
Expectations can lead to overwhelm, which can lead to exhaustion
Trust in God and do the next thing
We expect our children to do things at our pace, and that can lead to impatience
Here is the poem Kendra read:
Untitled, author unknown... source: https://wohbm.org/do-the-next-thing-elisabeth-elliot/
1. From an old English parsonage, down by the sea,
There came in the twilight a message for me;
Its quaint Saxon legend, deeply engraven,
It has, seems to me, God’s teaching from Heaven.
And on through the hours the quiet words ring,
Like a low inspiration: DO THE NEXT THING.
2. Many a questioning, many a fear,
Many a doubt has its quieting here.
Moment by moment, let down from Heaven,
Time, opportunity, guidance are given.
Fear not tomorrows, child of the King,
Trust them with Jesus. DO THE NEXT THING.
3. Do it immediately; do it with prayer;
Do it reliantly, casting all care;
Do it with reverence, tracing Christ’s hand
Who placed it before you with earnest command,
Stayed on His omnipotence, safe ‘neath His wing,
Leave all resultings. DO THE NEXT THING.
4. Looking to Jesus, ever serener,
Working or suffering, let this be your demeanor.
In His dear presence, the rest of His calm,
Let the light of Christ’s countenance be your psalm.
Strong in His faithfulness, praise and sing!
Then, as He commands you, DO THE NEXT THING.

Covenant Love
There’s a term for coventantal love in Hebrew called hesed.
There isn’t a great English translation of the word, so you can see it in Scripture as steadfast love, mercy, loving kindness.
Hesed refers to a steadfast faithfulness and unwavering commitment.
Hesed seeks the good of another. It’s not feelings based, but acts based on that covenant, meaning a person acts in love and serves. Covenant love is obligatory.
Covenants mean obligation.
God has entered into THE MOST precious, remarkable covenant of them all.
“God bound himself to act toward his people in certain ways, and he is utterly faithful to his self-commitment.” - Ligonier https://www.ligonier.org/learn/articles/loyal-love-hesed
And we see the fullness of God’s covenant love toward us through Jesus’s death on the cross. Jesus, the only one who was ever truly loyal to God the father and to his neighbor, became the covenant breaker and the curse so we might obtain his righteousness.
When we talk about love, we must start with that loyal covenant love the Lord bestows upon us. Then out of that love, we work out our covenant love toward him and toward others.
Siblings Can Be Best Friends
Biblical Loyalty in our homes creates a family culture that provides a security of love for them and encourages them to mature in godliness. That culture doesn’t end inside our homes but expands in our churches, community, cities, country and so forth.
One of the things I’m hopeful and prayerful about is as we work at being faithful towards one another in our household is for our children to be friends now, as they grow, and into adulthood.
I want to share a few more ideas with you from author Karen Andreola who wrote Mother Culture. This is a great handbook for mother’s who are eager to cultivate the souls of their children. It’s full of some many topics that truly have inspired and spurred me on and given me wisdom. I love that I can flip through it and read here and there where it interests me or I’m looking for wisdom or encouragement on a specific topic.
I want to share some of her wisdom in cultivating these sibling relationships.

SPF 233: Cultivating Loyalty in the Home
Loyalty is the virtue of faithfulness to a commitment or cause or person. For the Christian, we are to be loyal to Christ our Lord, and as Christian’s in a family, we are to be loyal to one another and to the household of God. This kind of faithfulness demonstrates a binding love and secure identity. Today I’m going to share some thoughts of how we can cultivate loyalty in the home out of a loyalty to Christ.

Loyalty in the Home
“I do think that families are the most beautiful things in the whole world.” - Jo March
Family is God’s design to fill the earth with his glory. It’s his idea, his creation, and his design to have a father, mother, and children working out their roles and responsibilities to bless one another, create a beautiful culture, and to bring glory and honor to God.
We are loyal to Christ as our Savior, worshiping and obeying him
And then we are loyal to our people - the people in our household. Just as a husband and wife leave their families to form a new family - cleaving to each other. This is a unique joining together - an adhering or gluing - of two people into ONE entity. The two will become one flesh. They have become a unit and from a husband and wife, children come. It’s a family. And Families are important because families create culture. We have the privilege and responsibility through ordinary means to create every day. Building family culture which will build community culture which will continue building more broadly.
Five Ways to Cultivate Loyalty in the Home
(reviewing these from Rachel Jankovic’s blog post: https://www.feminagirls.com/2014/08/28/funner-part-2-loyalty/
Identify yourself with your children without shame. Honor your husband and your children in public, regardless of public commentary.
Don’t be ashamed or frustrated by the postpartum body or home. Don’t let a bad attitude about our body or the state of our home eek out because it distances us from the cause - our children.
Create rules that foster loyalty. Some of the rules Rachel said were things like not allowing your children to make fun of one another, tell embarrassing stories on one another, side with friends against siblings, chose certain siblings to be close to and exclude other, not oversharing their weaknesses.
Serve one another. Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves.
Forgive one another. Freely you have received, freely give.

SPF 232: Tempations from the Enemy: Identity and Doubt
What can we learn from the temptation of Jesus in Matthew 4? Today I'm sharing how we can prove faithful when we are tempted to put our identity in other things and tempted to doubt the goodness of God. Plus one simple thing to do to resist temptation.

Temptation of the Enemy
Satan says, “If you are the Son of God. . . .turn these stones into bread.”
If you are. . .
Then prove it.
Jesus didn’t take the bait. He resisted with holiness, confidence, and obedience.
Jesus knew he was the Son of God and didn’t have to deviate from the Lord’s plan to prove it.
Sometimes situations come up that tempt us to prove who we are apart from Christ. We have a big target on our backs or hearts, or wherever the flaming arrows of the enemy feel like striking, and when that heat comes, do we rest in who we are in Christ?
Satan wanted to diminish the trustworthiness of God. Always casting doubt. Always tempting us to not believe in what God has said, even going so far as to distort Scripture.
As Christians we need to respond to the Word of God with faith, but also to get to know the heart of Scripture which essentially means - to continually get to know the whole will of God throughout the whole Bible. The heart behind Scripture is never to glorify man or to be independent and autonomous from God, or to achieve the will of God apart from God.
Do Good
“Let love be genuine. Abhor what is evil; hold fast to what is good. Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.” Romans 12:9, 21
we don’t just resist temptation or evil things, but we do good in it’s place. It’s not enough just to not sin. . . th primary way we resist evil is to do good things. Just like Jesus didn’t just justify us before God but also granted us his righteousness. And that’s what his temptation shows us - that not only did he not sin, but he was completely righteous in all he did. Look for the good things and do them. Having a cheerful heart instead of complaining; smiling at our children instead of criticizing; building up instead of tearing down; clinging to truth instead of fretting over unknowns.

Revival
Revival is a work of the Lord where He turns our hearts away from sin and rebellion and to Himself to live faithful and obedient lives.
Revival can happen individually or corporately. It happens when the Word is preached and people repent and return to the Lord.
Be discerning and be encouraged.

SPF 230: The Compassion of God
Charles Spurgeon wrote: Be it ours to remember the lovingkindness of the Lord, and to rehearse his deeds of grace. The compassion of God is tender, great, and never ending. But what about the times when it seems like God lacks compassion towards us? Today I am sharing truths to help our hearts and minds rehearse God’s deeds of grace and compassion.

The Compassion of God
The compassion of God is a tenderness towards his people because he knows the state we are in.
The Compassion of God:
The compassion of God is never ceasing. Lamentations 3:21-22
The compassion of God tends to our needs. Matthew 9:36, 15:32, 20:34
The compassion of God makes Him ready to receive us. Psalm 103:13
We must not mistake somethings as God lacking compassion.
Consequences for sin. The Lord is quick to forgive. And has incredible compassion towards sinners who come with broken and lowly hearts to him. BUT that doesn’t always mean consequences for our sin magically disappear.
The discipline of the Lord is also not contrary to his compassion. Spurgeon said, "His fixed purpose is not the destruction, but the instruction of his people. Wisdom hangs up the thermometer at the furnace mouth, and regulates the heat.”
God’s perspective and purpose is so much greater than we could know or understand or even want!
Wisdom from Spurgeon on Lamentations 3:21
“Memory is frequently the bond slave of despondency. Dispairing minds call to remembrance every dark foreboding in the past, and dilate upon every gloomy feature in the present; thus memory, clothed in sackcloth, presents to the mind a cup of mingled gall and wormwood. There is, however, no necessity for this. Wisdom can readily transform memory into an angel of comfort. That same recollection which in its left hand brings so many gloomy omens, may be trained to bear in its right a wealth of hopeful signs. She need not wear a crown of iron, she may encircle her brow with a fillet of gold, all spangled with stars. Thus it was in Jeremiah’s experience: in the previous verse memory had brought him to deep humiliation of soul: “My soul hath them still in remembrance, and is humbled in me;” and now this same memory restored him to life and comfort. “This I recall to my mind, therefore have I hope.” Like a two-edged sword, his memory first killed his pride with one edge, and then slew his despair with the other. As a general principle, if we would exercise our memories more wisely, we might, in our very darkest distress, strike a match which would instantaneously kindle the lamp of comfort. There is no need for God to create a new thing upon the earth in order to restore believers to joy; if they would prayerfully rake the ashes of the past, they would find light for the present; and if they would turn to the book of truth and the throne of grace, their candle would soon shine as aforetime. Be it ours to remember the lovingkindness of the Lord, and to rehearse his deeds of grace. Let us open the volume of recollection which is so richly illuminated with memorials of mercy, and we shall soon be happy. Thus memory may be, as Coleridge calls it, “the bosom-spring of joy,” and when the Divine Comforter bends it to his service, it may be chief among earthly comforters.” - Morning and Evening by Charles Spurgeon
SPF 229: How to Offer Gracious Words Instead of Being Easily Offended
Sometimes we encounter rude, thoughtless, or inconsiderate words from another. Whether it was intentional or accidental, how do we respond as a Christian woman? Today I am sharing a few ways we can cultivate gracious words and the blessings they bring to others as well as ourselves.

Offended or Gracious?
Scripture gives us a way to process offensive words in a Christian way and come out cheerful, free and full of peace instead of stewing and full of bitterness.
what do we do when someone has asked or said something that’s offended us?
Let us be gracious.
We are gracious because the Lord has been gracious with us. If anyone needs grace it’s our own selves. Let us not forget the incredible grace poured out on the cross for us because of our sin. When we remember God’s grace, it helps us to be gracious to others.
It’s not that thoughtless or rude or insensitive comments aren’t a big deal but it’s how we handle them - there is a path that leads to bitterness and one the leads to freedom and peace. One involves holding a grudge and stewing… the other, grace and wisdom.
Bottom line - it’s easy to be offended, but it takes effort to be gracious.
When I was looking up the phrase "gracious words” I found that gracious words do a few things:
They are honoring to God
They bless people
They influence for great good
First lets look at how gracious words are honoring to God:
Proverbs 15:26
The thoughts of the wicked are an abomination to the LORD,
but gracious words are pure.
Second gracious words bless others:
Proverbs 16:24
Gracious words are like a honeycomb,
sweetness to the soul and health to the body.
Third gracious words influence for great good:
Proverbs 22:11
He who loves purity of heart,
and whose speech is gracious, will have the king as his friend.
Ecclesiastes 10:12
The words of a wise man's mouth win him favor,
but the lips of a fool consume him.

Be Content
“Keep your life free from love of money, and be content with what you have, for he has said, “I will never leave you nor forsake you.” Hebrews 13:5
“Contentment is not a natural propensity of man. Covetousness, discontent, and murmuring are as natural to man as thorns are to the soil. We need not sow thistles and brambles, they come up naturally enough, because they are indigenous to earth; and so we need not teach men to complain; they complain fast enough without any education.” - Charles Spurgeon
“Not that I am speaking of being in need, for I have learned in whatever situation I am to be content.” Philippians 4:11
Spurgeon called contemned a flower of heaven, and JC Ryle says a contented spirit is the secret of a light heart and an easy mind.
JC Ryle says we learn contentment in such a world by casting off our pride and knowing our deserts in order to be thankful in any condition. He wrote in an article called Be Content, “If men really knew that they deserve nothing, and are debtors to God’s mercy every day, they would soon cease to complain.”
JC Ryle writes, “You may say perhaps that you have such crosses, and trials, and troubles, that it is impossible to be content. I answer, that you would do well to remember your ignorance. Do you know best, what is good for you, or does God? Are you wiser than here? The things you want, might ruin your soul. The things you have lost, might have poisoned you."
“Reader, I know not whether I make the point clear, but it is one which, simple as it seems, is a great practical importance. I want you to see the place in office of the Bible, and the unspeakable importance of knowing it well, and being acquainted with its contents. I want you to arm yourself with texts and verses of the Bible, fasten down in your memory, to read so as to remember, and to remember so as to use what you read.” - JC Ryle
